No Danish? No Problem. Discover Theatre in Denmark

Danish may be the language you hear most often in theatres across Denmark – but it is far from the only way to experience the magic of the stage. Throughout the year, Danish theatres present performances in English, as well as dance, puppetry, animation, circus and visual theatre where language is only part of the story.

From Shakespeare and classic drama to dystopian dance, absurd comedy and imaginative puppetry, there are plenty of ways to enjoy a night at the theatre – even if you don’t speak Danish. Here is a selection of performances to look out for.

HAMLETS SKYER



What happens when Shakespeare’s grief over the death of his young son meets the story of Hamlet? Hamlets Skyer explores the possible connection between Hamnet and Hamlet in a poetic and haunting encounter with one of theatre’s most famous stories.

ANIMAL FARM



George Orwell’s classic tale of power, rebellion and human nature comes to life in a playful and physical performance for three actors. With the help of the audience, they transform into the horses, cows, sheep, hens, dogs and pigs of the farm – with both humour and a darker message underneath.

MACBETH



Ambition, murder and a hunger for power take centre stage in Shakespeare’s timeless tragedy. Københavns Shakespeare Kompagni presents an intimate and affecting Macbeth in English, revealing the brutal consequences of a couple willing to do anything to reach the top.

STONES IN HIS POCKETS



Two actors, 15 characters and a Hollywood movie set in rural Ireland make for a fast-paced and hilarious tragicomedy. As Jake and Charlie get caught up in the excitement of the film industry, the realities of small-town life and uncertain futures begin to surface.

THE ESCAPE ROOM



What begins as an ordinary escape room soon turns into a dreamlike journey between reality and imagination. Through riddles, symbols and three mysterious guides, The Escape Room explores transformation, identity and the courage it takes to step into the unknown.

HÄPPY HOUR



What happens when cold winters, alcohol and socially awkward northerners collide? Häppy Hour turns the awkward moments of everyday life into a playful circus of aerial acrobatics, juggling and live music – reminding us that sometimes the best thing we can do is laugh at ourselves.

DINOSAUR WORLD



If humanity is heading towards extinction, perhaps the dinosaurs are the ones to ask for advice. In this imaginative and humorous puppet show, PERSONA NON GRATA brings dinosaurs back to life in a strange universe of puppets, video, robots and sound to explore what it means to face the end.

BEFORE THE END



How does it feel to stand on the edge of collapse – not knowing when, or how, everything will come crashing down? BEFORE THE END is a darkly humorous and intensely physical dance performance that turns fear, panic and hope into a dystopian carnival.

FESTIVAL OF WONDER
